The Cuan – A Story of Revival, Heritage and the Taste of the Sea
Nestled in the heart of the historic village of Strangford, The Cuan has long been a cornerstone of Northern Ireland’s coastal hospitality. Following an ambitious £1 million refurbishment, The Cuan re-opened its doors with a renewed sense of purpose, to celebrate the village’s rich maritime heritage and to showcase the very best of local seafood.
Strangford has always had a deep connection to the sea. For centuries, fishermen from the village have set out across Strangford Lough, returning with the day’s catch — from plump mussels and Strangford oysters to glistening mackerel and sea trout. This legacy inspired The Cuan’s transformation into an award-winning restaurant that honours both tradition and innovation.
Today, The Cuan’s kitchen works hand-in-hand with local Strangford fishermen and East Coast Seafoods in Ballyhornan, ensuring every plate reflects the freshness and authenticity of our waters. Guests travel from far and wide, many making a 50-mile round trip from Belfast to enjoy our signature dishes, from perfectly seared scallops to whole pan-fried Dover sole, each crafted with care and respect for provenance.
The Cuan stands today as more than just a restaurant, it is a celebration of Strangford’s history, a tribute to local craftsmanship, and a destination for those who believe that great food tastes even better when it tells a story.
