The Festive Atmosphere
The villages that dot the shores of Strangford Lough—such as Strangford, Portaferry and Killyleagh—come alive in December. Traditional Christmas lights adorn the façades of quaint cottages, and Christmas trees stand proudly in village greens and harboursides, while artisan markets pop up, offering handmade gifts, crafts and seasonal treats. The Christmas Tree and the Village lights will be turned on Sunday 7th December, filling Strangford with festive sparkle. The village will be adorned with Christmas cheer, music, and a wonderful holiday atmosphere. Gather your friends and family and book a table at The Cuan to continue the celebrations after the festivities.
Food and Festive Feasts
No Christmas in Strangford Lough would be complete without indulging in some seasonal fare. At The Cuan, we serve up fresh seafood, hearty roasts and the best pint of Guinness in County Down. Our All Day Menu celebrates the best of local produce, featuring juicy burgers, succulent steaks from the josper grill and a selection of vegetarian and vegan options to suit every palate. Whether you are stopping by for a light lunch or dinner, there is an array of dishes to choose from, all complemented by our carefully curated wine list. Being on the coast we have a regular supply of excellent fresh seafood from our friend Marty Johnston at the award winning East Coast Seafoods and from Harry and his team at Lecale Seafood.
Winter Wildlife and Scenery
Strangford Lough is renowned for its spectacular scenery and rich wildlife. During Christmas, the landscape is often cloaked in frost or, if you’re lucky, a gentle dusting of snow. Birdwatchers flock to the lough, as thousands of migratory birds, including Brent geese make their winter home here. Peaceful walks along the shoreline or through the National Trust properties offer breathtaking views and a chance for quiet reflection amid the festive rush.
Local Traditions and Events
For the more adventurous, the Boxing Day swim—where brave souls plunge into the chilly waters of the lough—has become something of a tradition. Crowds gather to watch, cheer, and sometimes join in, all in aid of local charities. Why not treat yourself to a delicious lunch in The Cuan afterwards? Sit back by the cosy roaring fire and enjoy freshly cooked local produce with a little Christmas tipple!
Santa Cruise – Every year the Strangford Lough Activity Centre hosts the ‘Santa Cruise’. Santa Cruise is our Christmas experience for families with a guided boat trip with Santa from Sketrick Island, Whiterock, Killinchy, Co.Down. Join our merry old Santa for a hair-raising sleigh ride around the islands aboard their fast speed boat – Black Jacket. Hold onto your Santa hats as they fly through the waters of Strangford Lough. You will be carol singing all the way, listening to some Christmas tunes whilst riding the waves back to base.
